Coopers Rock Trailwork Day, Saturday, April 21st

“What better place to celebrate Earth Day than Coopers Rock?” wonders Adam Polinski, Trailwork Coordinator for the Coopers Rock Foundation. The Foundation is hosting two trailwork sessions on Saturday, April 21st, open to anyone interested. The trail maintenance sessions will feature light-to-medium-duty trailwork around two popular loops – the Intermediate Loop and the Hemlock Loop. Work will focus on keeping trails dry and clear.

“Spring-like weather is returning, and we’ll be doing a little Spring cleaning so that everyone’s experience on the trails during the upcoming year will be that much better,” explained Polinski.

WVU student Evan Williams, also of the Coopers Rock Foundation, explained how trailwork is a multi-faceted experience. “Trailwork outings give you a chance to do some community service, get in a good workout, learn the trails at Coopers Rock State Forest, meet other people who like Coopers Rock, and even take some photos, all while enjoying the forest.”

“This is also a great opportunity for any students looking to earn some community service hours before the end of the semester,” added Polinski.

From 9:00-12:00 – Intermediate Loop Trail. Meet at the pull-off along the main road near the Front Gate (Day Use) Parking Lot, close to the large white Roadside Trail sign, just ¼ mile from the I-68 Coopers Rock exit.

From 1:00-5:00 – Hemlock Loop Trail. Meet at the Hemlock Trailhead, at a pull-off on the left, 2 ½ miles east of the I-68 Coopers Rock exit on Rt. 73.

Latecomers – for each of these loops, find the trail crew by hiking in the counter-clockwise direction.

Tools and gloves will be provided. Bring snacks and water. Dress appropriately (long pants and boots highly recommended, sandals not permitted for safety reasons).

“Creeks should be high, providing good scenic photo opportunities. Bring a camera!” mentioned Williams.

“This Spring,” concluded Polinski “celebrate Earth Day by actually spending time in the forest!”
